What Does Skin Needling Actually Do to Your Skin?

Skin needling uses a device with fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled microscopic channels in the skin. These tiny channels trigger the skin’s natural repair response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin.

It can be used to improve the appearance of uneven texture, acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines, stretch marks and skin that has lost some firmness and bounce.

Skin needling is usually performed as a course of treatments rather than as a one-off session. Most people benefit from approximately three to six treatments, generally spaced four to six weeks apart, depending on the skin concern and treatment depth.

The mechanism, in plain terms

Your skin is very good at repairing itself, and skin needling works by taking advantage of that natural process.

The microneedling device contains a sterile cartridge of fine needles that move rapidly in a controlled vertical motion, creating microscopic channels at a depth selected specifically for the area and concern being treated.

Each channel is small enough to begin closing quickly, but the skin still recognises the controlled injury and starts its natural repair sequence. This involves an initial inflammatory response, followed by new tissue formation and then collagen remodelling.

The remodelling stage is where many of the longer-term changes come from. Over the weeks following treatment, the skin gradually produces new collagen and elastin in the treated area. This can help soften the appearance of scarring, refine uneven texture, improve firmness and improve the appearance of thin or crepey skin. Individual responses vary.

Modern motorised micro-needling devices deliver needles vertically into the skin, allowing treatment depth to be carefully controlled while minimising unnecessary surface trauma.

Skin needling also produces a temporary increase in skin permeability following treatment. The micro-channels created during the procedure can enhance the delivery of specifically selected, sterile products that are designed to be used alongside micro-needling. For this reason, the products applied during and immediately after treatment are chosen very carefully.

What it treats well

Skin needling may be beneficial for a number of common skin concerns, including:

  • Acne scarring, particularly rolling and boxcar scars
  • The appearance of enlarged pores and uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines, including crepey texture around the eyes and mouth
  • Stretch marks and some types of surgical scarring, on both the face and body
  • Skin that has lost firmness, elasticity or bounce

Results vary depending on the concern being treated, the severity of the condition, the treatment depth and the individual skin response.

Skin needling may also be combined with regenerative treatments such as platelet-rich plasma or platelet-rich fibrin, where appropriate, using components derived from your own blood. Your clinician can determine whether combining treatments is suitable for your skin and individual goals.

The honest recovery timeline

People are sometimes told that skin needling has no downtime. While recovery is generally manageable, some visible redness, dryness or flaking should still be expected. The exact recovery time depends on the intensity of the treatment and your individual skin response.

Day of treatment

The skin will usually look noticeably red and may feel warm, tight or slightly sensitive, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. For most people, this is when the redness is at its most noticeable.

Day one to two

Redness generally begins to fade towards pink. Some people may experience mild tightness, dryness or slight swelling, particularly around delicate areas such as underneath the eyes.

Day two to four

The skin may begin to feel slightly dry, rough or sandpapery and some light flaking may occur as the skin renews itself.

Day five to seven

Most clients are largely settled within several days, although recovery varies depending on treatment depth and individual skin response. The skin may begin to look brighter and feel smoother as it settles.

As a general rule, avoid booking a more intensive skin needling treatment immediately before anything you cannot reschedule. Allowing around four to seven days is sensible, particularly if you have not had skin needling before and do not yet know how your skin responds.

Numbing cream may be applied before treatment and allowed time to take effect. Most people describe the treatment as a prickling or vibrating sensation rather than sharp pain, although areas such as the forehead and jawline may feel more sensitive.

How many sessions, and how far apart?

Most people benefit from approximately three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, although this varies depending on what is being treated.

The interval between treatments is important because collagen remodelling continues for several weeks after each session. Treating again too soon may interrupt a healing and remodelling process that is still actively developing.

Some clients begin to notice changes in texture and overall skin quality after the first few treatments. Acne scarring generally requires a longer course and may need the higher end of the recommended treatment range, or sometimes additional sessions depending on the severity of the scarring.

Improvement is gradual rather than immediate. Collagen remodelling can continue for several months after a course of treatment, which means the skin may continue to change even after your final session. Maintenance treatments may then be recommended depending on your skin goals, age, lifestyle and response to treatment.

Who should not have it

Skin needling may need to be postponed or avoided in certain circumstances. Treatment is generally not performed over:

  • Active acne breakouts or inflamed lesions in the treatment area
  • Active cold sores or herpes lesions in or around the treatment area
  • Active skin infections
  • Eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis that is currently flaring in the area being treated
  • Open wounds or significantly compromised skin

Treatment is also generally postponed during pregnancy.

Additional caution may be required for people with a history of keloid scarring, certain bleeding disorders, immune conditions or medications that may affect healing.

If you have recently undergone a peel, laser treatment or another procedure that temporarily compromises the skin barrier, your skin may also need additional time to recover before skin needling is performed. Significant recent sun exposure or sunburn is another reason treatment may need to be delayed.

All of this should be assessed during your consultation before treatment.

What to do afterwards

For the first few days after skin needling, keep your skincare routine simple. Use a gentle cleanser and a basic hydrating or barrier-supporting product as recommended by your clinician.

Avoid strong active ingredients while the skin is recovering. This generally includes:

  • Retinoids
  • Exfoliating acids such as AHAs and BHAs
  • Physical scrubs
  • Strong or potentially irritating vitamin C products
  • Other active ingredients that may increase irritation

These can usually be gradually reintroduced once the skin has fully settled, often around five to seven days after treatment, although this varies from person to person.

Do not pick, scrub or exfoliate any flaking skin. Allow it to shed naturally.

Sun protection is particularly important after skin needling. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV exposure and pigmentation, so daily broad-spectrum SPF and avoiding excessive sun exposure are essential during the healing period.

Once your skin has settled, maintaining a consistent home skincare routine can also help support your results between treatments.

Frequently asked questions

How many skin needling sessions do I need?

Most people benefit from around three to six sessions, generally spaced four to six weeks apart. The number you need depends on your skin concern, its severity and how your skin responds. Some clients notice early improvements in texture within the first few treatments, while concerns such as acne scarring often require a longer course.

Does skin needling hurt?

Numbing cream may be applied before treatment, so most people find the procedure manageable. It is usually described as a prickling or vibrating sensation rather than sharp pain. Certain areas, particularly the forehead and jawline, may feel more sensitive.

How long is the downtime after skin needling?

Downtime varies depending on the depth and intensity of treatment. Most clients experience approximately two to seven days of some combination of redness, dryness, tightness or mild flaking. The skin is usually most noticeably red on the day of treatment, with redness gradually settling over the following days.

Does skin needling help acne scars?

Skin needling can be beneficial for certain types of acne scarring, including rolling and boxcar scars. Scarring usually requires a course of treatments, and improvement develops gradually as collagen remodelling takes place. Some types of deeper or tethered acne scarring may benefit from other treatments, so your skin should be assessed to determine the most appropriate approach.

When will I see results from skin needling?

Some people notice an improvement in skin texture and overall skin quality within the first few weeks after treatment. The main change from skin needling develops gradually as new collagen is produced and remodelled. Results can continue developing for several months after treatment, particularly when completing a course of sessions. Outcomes vary between individuals.
