MICRO FOCUSED ULTRASOUND • ULTRAFORMER MPT 4
Ultraformer MPT HIFU in Cairns
Ultraformer MPT 4 is a micro focused ultrasound system, often called HIFU, used at Age Amazingly in Cairns to support firmness and facial contour without surgery. Energy is delivered below the surface of the skin to prompt the skin’s own collagen response. A session usually takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.
Each treatment is planned individually during a complimentary consultation where we also disucss the treatment costs for your tailored treatment program.
What is Ultraformer MPT?
MPT stands for micro pulse technology. The Ultraformer MPT 4 is the micro focused ultrasound system used at our Cairns clinic. It delivers focused ultrasound energy at selected depths beneath the skin while leaving the surface of the skin intact. Because the surface is not broken, there is no wound to heal and no peeling afterwards.
Different handpieces reach different depths, so the deeper supporting layer and the more superficial layer can each be treated within the same session according to what your clinician assesses is appropriate for you.
Every person responds differently with results influenced by your age, skin quality, degree of laxity, general health and medications.
What Ultraformer MPT may be considered for
Focused ultrasound may be considered where the concern is firmness rather than surface texture, for example:
- jawline definition and the appearance of jowls
- heavy looking brows and upper eyelids
- early looseness under the chin
- cheeks that have lost some firmness
- crepey looking skin on the neck or decolletage
- overall firmness and contour of the face and neck
- fine lines and skin quality around the mouth
- crepey or lax-looking skin on the arms, abdomen, thighs and knees
How the treatment works
Ultrasound gel is applied and the handpiece is moved across the treatment area in a carefully mapped out grid formation. Each line delivers focused energy to a set depth, creating small points of controlled thermal stimulation in the tissue below the surface.
Those points prompt the body’s own repair response. Over the following weeks the skin may lay down new collagen at that depth, and it is that new collagen rather than the treatment itself that produces any firming. This is the part most people misunderstand. Focused ultrasound does not tighten skin on the day of treatment. It asks the skin to respond over the months that follow, and the degree of response differs between individuals.
How long a session takes
A session usually takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Your clinician may recommend up to three treatments, spaced approximately 1-3 months apart, to support the best possible outcome for your individual needs.
What treatment may feel like
Sensations vary between people. Most describe brief warmth and small prickling sensations as each line of energy is delivered, usually stronger over bonier areas such as the brow.
Afterwards the skin may look slightly flushed and feel tender or tingly, similar to mild sunburn. Temporary effects can include redness, mild swelling, tenderness, tingling or a bruised feeling in the treated area. The risks relevant to you will be discussed before you consent to treatment. Please note that this treatment is not suitable for patients with a pacemaker.
Recovery and aftercare
For most people there is no meaningful downtime. Makeup can usually be applied and normal activity resumed the same day. You will be given written aftercare instructions for your treatment, and sun protection is important afterwards.
Follow the aftercare provided and contact the clinic if you have any questions or concerns.
When changes may be noticed
Any change is gradual and varies between individuals.
- Straight after: a mild, temporary tightening from the tissue response. This is not the result and it settles.
- Four to six weeks: the first genuine changes, where they occur, are often noticed around the jaw and cheeks.
- Two to three months: the point at which most people who respond see the clearest difference, as collagen remodelling matures.
- Beyond that: where there is a response it is typically maintained for around twelve to eighteen months, then gradually softens as natural ageing continues.
Results develop gradually, supporting a refreshed and natural-looking appearance. Your response will be individual and we will discuss realistic expectations and what may be suitable for you during your consultation.
Who may benefit from focused ultrasound
Focused ultrasound may be considered for people experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity who are looking for a gradual, non-surgical approach with minimal disruption to their usual routine.
During your consultation, we assess the degree of laxity, tissue position and overall skin condition to determine whether focused ultrasound is likely to be a suitable option for your concerns. Where other concerns are also present, we can discuss a treatment plan tailored to your skin and goals.
If your main concerns are closer to the skin surface, such as pigmentation, uneven texture, congestion or dullness, we may recommend a different treatment pathway, or incorporate focused ultrasound into a broader plan alongside other treatments where appropriate. You can see the range on our skin rejuvenation page.
Treatment may need to be modified, postponed or avoided in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, with an active skin infection or significant inflammatory skin condition in the treatment area, with certain implanted electrical devices, with impaired healing, where the skin is very thin or facial volume in the treatment area is low, and with some medicines and medical conditions. This list is not exhaustive. Your clinician will take a full history at consultation to assess suitability.

What Ultraformer MPT may be combined with
For some people one technology is not the whole answer. Where it is clinically appropriate, your clinician may plan Ultraformer MPT alongside other treatments offered at our Cairns clinic:
- Collagen stimulation through regenerative treatments. PRP and PRF are prepared from your own blood on the day of treatment. See regenerative skin treatments.
- Skin needling. Medical grade microneedling works nearer the surface on texture and fine lines, where focused ultrasound works deeper on firmness. The two address different concerns.
- Fractional laser resurfacing. Our Etherea erbium laser may be considered where surface texture and tone are also a concern.
- Hydration treatments. Options such as the Pink Treatment and HydraFacial support skin hydration and comfort as part of a wider plan.
For some clients, the strongest approach is not a single treatment, but the right combination. It may be discussed as part of your treatment plan that focused ultrasound could be layered with other treatments to address different aspects of ageing and skin quality, with each step planned around your individual concerns, goals and treatment timing.

Sensations vary. Most people describe brief warmth and small prickling sensations as energy is delivered, usually stronger over bonier areas such as the brow. Tell your clinician if you are uncomfortable, as settings can be reviewed during the session.
-
For most people there is no meaningful downtime. Some redness, mild swelling or tenderness can occur and usually settles within hours to a day. Bruising and temporary changes in sensation are less common but possible, and will be discussed with you before treatment.
-
Depending on the area being treated, your degree of skin laxity and your individual treatment goals, a series of up to three focused ultrasound treatments may be recommended. We invite you back 2-4 weeks after your treatment for a complimentary review, where we can assess your progress, discuss how your skin is responding and talk through the next steps in your treatment plan. Your treatment plan is individual and any further sessions will be recommended based on your response, suitability and goals.

They work at different depths for different concerns. Focused ultrasound targets deeper firmness and contour. Skin needling and laser resurfacing work nearer the surface on texture, tone and fine lines. They are often used alongside each other rather than instead of each other, and your clinician will advise which is appropriate for your skin.
