How Many Sessions Does Laser Tattoo Removal Take?

Many tattoos require multiple sessions, often around 6 to 12 or more, with adequate healing time between appointments. There is no single treatment schedule that suits everyone. The number you need depends on ink colour, density and depth, the age and location of the tattoo, and your own skin and healing response.

At Age Amazingly, laser tattoo removal is planned around your individual tattoo, skin type and response to treatment.

The number of sessions you may need can be influenced by:

  • ink colour, composition and density
  • tattoo size and depth
  • professional, amateur or cosmetic tattooing
  • tattoo age and location
  • layering or previous cover up work
  • your skin type, general health and individual healing response

Your tattoo will be assessed during consultation. We can discuss a reasonable treatment range, but the final number of sessions cannot be guaranteed.

How laser tattoo removal works

Laser energy is used to target tattoo pigment and break it into smaller particles that your body can naturally remove through your lymphatic system. Your own body does the removal, gradually clearing some of these particles over the weeks following treatment.

Results develop progressively and vary between individuals. After the first few sessions, your treatment response may provide a clearer indication of how readily the tattoo is likely to fade.

What actually changes the number of sessions?

Ink colour

Different colours respond differently to laser wavelengths. Black and some darker pigments may respond more readily, while green, light blue, yellow, white and pastel pigments can be more resistant. Some cosmetic, white or skin coloured pigments may darken unexpectedly when treated. A test spot or alternative treatment plan may therefore be recommended.

Tattoo type and ink density

Professional tattoos are often applied more deeply and contain a greater concentration of pigment. Amateur tattoos may contain less ink, but application depth and composition can be unpredictable.

Age of the tattoo

Older tattoos may have already faded naturally and sometimes respond differently from newer tattoos. Age alone, however, does not determine how many sessions will be required.

Where it is on your body

Circulation and lymphatic clearance can influence fading. Tattoos on the hands, fingers, ankles, feet and lower legs may respond more slowly than tattoos located closer to the centre of the body.

Layering and cover ups

A cover up may contain several layers, colours and types of pigment. These tattoos commonly require a longer and more complex treatment plan.

Your individual health

Healing and clearance may be affected by factors such as smoking, circulation, immune function, medications, health conditions and adherence to aftercare instructions.

Why the gap between sessions matters

Treatment appointments are generally spaced several weeks apart, with the exact interval determined by your practitioner.

This recovery period allows the skin to heal and gives your body time to process the fragmented pigment. Treating an area too soon may not improve clearance and can increase the likelihood of complications.

Your treatment interval may be extended according to your skin response, treatment location or clinical circumstances.

What does treatment feel like?

Laser tattoo removal can feel sharp, hot or similar to the flick of an elastic band. Discomfort varies between individuals, and treatment time depends on the tattoo’s size and complexity. Cooling may be used to support comfort during the procedure.

Describing the treatment as painless, or suggesting that there is no downtime, would not accurately reflect every person’s experience.

What can I expect afterwards?

Immediately after treatment, the area may temporarily appear white or frosted. Redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness can occur. Blistering, crusting or pinpoint bleeding is also possible.

Less common but important risks include:

  • temporary or permanent changes in skin pigmentation
  • infection
  • changes in skin texture
  • scarring
  • an incomplete response or residual pigment
  • unexpected darkening or colour change of some inks
  • a temporary outline or ghost of the original tattoo

Existing scars caused by the original tattooing may become more noticeable as the pigment fades.

You will receive personalised aftercare instructions. Avoid picking blisters, crusts or scabs, protect the area from sun exposure and contact the clinic if you are concerned about your healing.

Can every tattoo be completely removed?

Complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Some tattoos fade substantially, while others retain residual colour or a faint outline.

White, yellow, pastel and certain cosmetic pigments can be particularly unpredictable. Professionally applied, heavily saturated and layered tattoos may also be more resistant.

If your goal is to lighten the tattoo before a cover up, please mention this during consultation. Partial fading may require fewer sessions than attempting maximum clearance.

Frequently asked questions

How many laser tattoo removal sessions will I need?

Many tattoos require approximately 6 to 12 or more sessions, but this is only a general guide. Your tattoo and skin will be assessed before an individual treatment plan is recommended.

How far apart are my appointments?

Appointments are commonly separated by several weeks. Your practitioner will determine an appropriate interval according to healing, skin response and treatment location.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

The procedure can be uncomfortable. Most sessions are relatively brief, and cooling may be used to help manage discomfort.

Which colours are more difficult to treat?

Response varies according to pigment composition and the available laser wavelength. Green, light blue, yellow, white, pastel and cosmetic pigments may be more resistant or unpredictable.

Will it leave a scar?

Scarring is a possible risk, although it does not occur in every case. Risk can be influenced by the tattoo, laser response, treatment technique, infection, sun exposure and aftercare. Any pre existing tattoo scars will remain after the pigment fades.

Start with an individual consultation

At Age Amazingly, every tattoo removal journey begins with a thorough consultation. We will assess your tattoo and skin, discuss your medical history, explain the potential benefits and risks, and consider whether complete removal or fading for a cover up is the more realistic goal.

Treatment is only recommended when considered clinically appropriate for you. Individual results and recovery experiences vary.
