Ageing is a choice

What's the difference between wrinkles and fine lines?

Tuesday, October 24, 2017

We often hear wrinkles and fine lines being mentioned together, but are they the same thing?

The main difference between fine lines and wrinkles is depth. Wrinkles are folds in the skin measuring 3mm or over. Anything less than that are fine lines. Fine lines are often caused by lax skin and are associated with the earliest signs of ageing or sun damage.

Wrinkles are more complex and are predominately caused by muscle contractions under the skin such as smiling, squinting or frowning. Repeated facial muscle movements, contracting and releasing in the same way over the years creates folds along the habitual lines.

But did you know there is more than one type of wrinkle? Dynamic and Static.

Dynamic wrinkles occur during the muscle movement. If there is a wrinkle during the muscle movement but nothing once the movement is over, you have a dynamic wrinkle. These help to show emotion and expression - nothing to necessarily worry about, but over time these can develop into static wrinkles.

Static wrinkles remain on the skin even after the muscle movement is over. These often develop from dynamic wrinkles over time. Anti-wrinkle injections can be administered to relax these wrinkles yet still allow you to show emotion and expression, avoiding the 'frozen' look.

If you're not sure which category you fall into, don't worry - we have a number of treatments to combat fine lines and both types of wrinkles. Come into the clinic for a consultation and see how we can help you.

Laser Genesis therapy

Tuesday, October 10, 2017
Laser Genesis skin therapy is an innovative, technologically advanced way to promote vibrant and healthy looking skin in men and women.
Now you can have a more youthful appearance by treating those conditions that are typically associated with premature signs of ageing and sun damage, such as excessive redness, large pores, uneven texture, and fine line wrinkles. The Laser Genesis procedure has been scientifically proven to produce new collagen.
The Laser Genesis difference:
The Laser Genesis procedure utilizes non-invasive laser technology to discretely and efficiently treat fine line wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture, diffuse redness and scars.
You can expect to see subtle yet consistent results after each treatment, without unwanted side effects such as bruising or excessive skin irritation. Treatments can be performed in a relaxed, comfortable manner without the use of topical anesthetics or gel.
What areas can be treated?
Laser Genesis patients report excellent results over their entire faces and necks. Additionally, your practitioner may suggest this therapy to diminish recent scars on other parts of the body.
What is diffuse redness?
Diffuse redness is a general appearance of facial redness, such as rosy cheeks. This condition is caused by dilated capillaries, resulting in an appearance of general redness, not discrete, well-defined vessels. The most commonly affected areas are the nose, forehead and cheeks.
Diffuse redness is often associated with a common condition called rosacea and it can be hereditary. Laser Genesis will help your appearance by gently treating and reducing this condition.
What does the procedure feel like?
Patients often describe the treatment as relaxing and therapeutic. You will experience a gentle warming of your skin’s surface during the procedure as the laser handpiece is moved back and forth about 1/2 inch above your skin. You can immediately return to normal activities, utilizing sunscreen if participating in outdoor activities.
How does Laser Genesis work?
By gently heating the upper dermis well below your skin’s surface, Laser Genesis improves the appearance of wrinkles through collagen stimulation. Additional heat is generated in dilated capillaries to reduce redness.
What can I expect before the treatment?
You will not need gel, anesthetic cream or ice prior to treatment. Before the actual Laser Genesis treatment, you will be asked to remove your make-up or moisturizers and, in some cases, you may be asked to shave the area to be treated. Your physician will review and assist with all pre-treatment requirements.
How many treatments will I need?
The treatment results are often subtle. On average, you may require four to six treatments in order to achieve optimal results. Every patient’s condition and needs vary.
What are the possible side effects?
Although most patients report few if any side effects, the most common is a slight redness that disappears within a few hours of treatment.
What kind of textural improvements can you expect with Laser Genesis skin therapy?
Over the course of four to five treatments, Laser Genesis can help restore the skin’s youthful glow and appearance by smoothing out uneven textures caused by ageing, sun damage or scars. You will see a creamier, healthy complexion as large pores are reduced in size, and minor imperfections are diminished. The individual treatment results are subtle and natural-looking, but the overall effect of multiple treatments can be quite dramatic.
